Aloe vera is a gelatinous plant with a slightly bitter taste if consumed, but a great ability to soothe topically if used on the skin. To use, take a sharp knife and slice away the thin outer layer of skin to reveal the gooey insides. Slice down the sides and remove all skin if wanting to use it all at once, or slice horizontally only at the base and squeeze if you only want a little. The plant will reseal itself and keep good for weeks if you want to use it this second way. Typically used topically or eaten in small amounts.
Aloe is associated with potential collagen synthesis, protection against radiation damage to the skin, improvement of skin integrity, decrease in the appearance of fine wrinkles, and reduced infection and recovery time needed for first and second degree burns.
